The cover of Black Witch Moon by Colin Garrow

Black Witch Moon by Colin Garrow is a horror set in 1620s London, and the first novella in the new Black Witch Saga series.

Thank you to Rachel of Rachel’s Random Resources for sending me a free copy of Black Witch Moon in return for an honest review.

Black Witch Moon is set in London in 1625, and centres around a young woman called Elizabeth (or Lizzie) Pickin. Lizzie has been accused of being a witch by several people including a doctor, Robert Winter. Being a superstitious time, she is hanged — but now he’s worried that she may have been wrongfully accused.

Black Witch Moon is available on Amazon in both Kindle and paperback format (this is an Affiliate link), and add it to your Goodreads list!

My review

Black Witch Moon is a horror novella of 150 pages that are filled with atmosphere from the very beginning! The story is fast-paced, not wasting anytime in jumping straight into the story. There is a lot of intrigue and at times it feels more like a mystery, with Robert Winter trying to find out the truth of the accusations against Lizzie. I loved the historical setting. Plus I always enjoy stories set in London that reference real landmarks around the city that I am familiar with.

Robert Winter is an interesting character, who is struggling with his own conscience and his involvement in Lizzie’s death, too. I thought the author did a great job in reflecting the language and attitudes of the 1600s (or at least, what I know of it!).

I was left feeling unnerved by the end. I didn’t find it scary as such but I was left wondering what the truth was and what had really happened. This is a great read for anyone who is after a short horror story with a historical setting!

The blurb for Black Witch Moon

Tyburn, 1625. A young woman hanged as a witch. A doctor plagued by nightmares.

Wracked by guilt, Robert Winter struggles with the notion that a witch may have been wrongly accused. But if that is so, what can he do about it?

When strange things begin to happen, Winter’s understanding of good and evil are put to the test. Compelled to choose one or the other, he soon learns that taking sides is the least of his problems…

In this horror series set in London, the novella Black Witch Moon is book #1 in the Black Witch Saga.
