The cover and blurb for Crane Fly by Kelly-Marie Pollock

Crane Fly by Kelly-Marie Pollock is a brand new novella, and set in the Chronicles of Cherry Nova series.

Thank you to Melanie of Fraser’s Fun House for sending me an Advanced Review Copy in return for an honest review.

Crane Fly is a set in the Chronicles of Cherry Nova series, during the events of Death Bringer. While Nova and Ruth are off-world, Bucky O’Dare has been left behind to hold the fort in London. Local Madam Lady Jaine has been murdered and Soul’s nightclub is about to reopen under new management. Bucky sets out to investigate the new owner.

You can buy a copy of Crane Fly in eBook from Amazon (currently just 99p!) or add it to your list on Goodreads. I recommend first reading book 1, Cherry Nova, and book 2, Death Bringer, to catch up on the series.

My review

A few months ago I read the Chronicles of Cherry Nova trilogy so far, and really enjoyed both books. Bucky was my favourite character but didn’t feature much in Death Bringer, so it was great to be able to catch up with him.

In this book we learn about his relationship with Ruth from his point of view, and about his life before he met Nova. I also really enjoyed meeting his friend Jason, who is currently having marital problems. Bucky tries to support his friend and offer advice. He comes across as very kind and caring, which gave his friendship with Nova much more context!

We also meet a few new characters who are currently living in Max’s mansion, a werewolf called Ezra and a vampire called Hardy, and Jason’s sister, a prostitute called Magna. Another new character is Angelica (or Bonnie), who has multiple personalities trapped within her body. She sounds fascinating and I’d love to learn more about her in the next book.

Crane Fly might only be short at 70 pages, but Kelly-Marie has packed in a lot of story too. The story is very fast-paced and picks up in the second half of the book. I was kept guessing throughout the story about what was going to happen next.

Crane Fly is a fantastic addition to the series, and I really enjoyed it — if you are a fan of the previous two books, then this is an absolute must-read.

The blurb for Crane Fly

All Bucky O’Dare has ever wanted is an easy life. But after meeting fiery red-headed vampire, Nova Morgan, he realises his life will never be the same again.

The world of the Inflicted Kin is full of darkness, something Bucky is becoming increasingly more aware of, especially after the charred corpse of local Brothel Madam – Lady Jaine turns up complete with a shiny dagger lodged in her chest.

Bucky realises there’s a new player in town, one who may just make Soul seem saintly.

With Nova and Ruth off world, it’s down to him to unravel the mystery and figure out who is killing off the local working girls and why.

But Bucky is treading a dangerous path, one that may just see him end up as another stiff on the morgue table.

For the wrath of the wicked is nothing compared to the wrath of a vengeful brother.
